Sequoia-Kings Canyon

Park Services Company

*

About Us

We are Kings Canyon Park Services Company, a concessionaire working under contract with the National Park Service and the US Forest Service to give our visitors a memorable stay.  We operate lodges, restaurants, gift shops, and grocery markets in Kings Canyon National Park and the Giant Sequoia National Monument. We hire over 80 seasonal employees to work each summer in our facilities. Our season is Memorial Day through Labor Day with the peak business June through August.

Three of our locations are open year round.  We maintain a year-round staff of approximately 80 people.

Our primary goal is to provide the highest quality service to our guests while protecting park resources and teaching our employees to preserve nature for public enjoyment, with assistance from the National Park Service. In addition to our orientations and National Park Service training, we encourage employee volunteerism for bear management.

What You Can Expect From Us ...

During your leisure time you will be able to explore Kings Canyon National Park and the surrounding Giant Sequoia National Monument. Marked walking trails are plentiful throughout the park for strolling, hiking and backpacking. You will meet and assist people who travel the world over to visit the trees and canyons that you will get to experience every day. Camping, horseback riding, fishing, rock climbing, nature walks, and Park Service programs are just a few of the advantages of working with our company.

We value our employees and encourage recreational activities during the summer. In addition to free bear canister rentals for backpacking employees, we offer employee discounts in our gift shops, markets and lodging facilities.

Employees need to arrange their own transportation to and from Kings Canyon National Park.  There is no public transportation in or out of the park. Employees with their own vehicles will experience more mobility to the nearby towns and surrounding areas. The towns closest to the park are Fresno, Visalia and Sanger; each are one hour away.

What We Expect From You
This is one of the most fascinating places you could spend your summer, but it is hard work! While you are on duty, you will work hard, and you should not base your decision to work here on financial gain. Hourly pay will vary based on your experience and your position.  We guarantee all employees California minimum wage. Applicants who can work the entire summer will receive priority consideration upon hiring, but we encourage applicants who wish to be considered for mid and late season replacements to apply also.

Teamwork and cooperative friendliness are necessary both while you are working and when you are not. We encourage you to make the most of your employment with our company, and we try to give employees two consecutive days off when possible. An average workweek is 40 hours, but not guaranteed, and employees must be willing to work weekends, holidays and double shifts if necessary. Living and working in the park is not a vacation; it is a hard and sometimes stressful job, but it is also an exhilarating experience that will stay with you forever.

ELIGIBILITY

The federal government requires all new and returning employees to present valid documentation of identity and employment eligibility to work within the United States. Acceptable documentation includes, but is not limited to: A valid U.S. passport or a picture ID such as a valid drivers license as well as proof of eligibility such as an original Social Security card. Duplicated or faxed documentation is not acceptable. Employees will not be permitted to begin work without required documentation.

Kings Canyon Park Services Company provides equal opportunity employment without regard to race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability or veteran status to all applicants and employees
.

BASIC EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

Health
You must be willing and able to work at a 7,000-foot elevation. People with a respiratory or heart condition might not be able to do so. Keep in mind that medical care facilities are approximately one and half-hours away by car. Many jobs require the ability to work on your feet all day, and you should be prepared to walk up to a half mile to work. We do perform pre-employment drug screening and background checks.  Employees must agree to random drug testing and must agree to follow our company's drug-free policy.  Smoking is not permitted in any company buildings, including housing.

Standards of Conduct
We expect responsibility and maturity from our employees at work and at home. You will have a roommate in company housing and you must be considerate of your fellow employees living with and around you.  The National Park Service prohibits firearms in the parks. You will receive an Employee Handbook, which you are expected to read, sign and abide by.

The impression visitors have of our company hinges on you, our employee. We require our employees to maintain a clean, well-groomed appearance, avoiding extreme hairstyles and color. Excessive jewelry, cologne and highly visible tattoos do not meet our hospitality standards. All employees must arrive with clean black pants and black enclosed footwear. Food servers will need to bring white shirts in addition to their black pants and black shoes.  Uniform shirts will be provided for those working in other departments.

HOUSING & MEALS

If needed, employee housing is available for non-local employees. The cost is $5 per day, plus a refundable housing deposit of $150. It is deducted from your biweekly paycheck. The cabins are rustic and are the size of an average bedroom.  Two and sometimes three people are assigned to a room. The rooms have electricity, basic furnishings and a central bath facility. They are one step above camping out. Employee amenities include a central kitchen and laundry facility. Employee living conditions include mountain critters (ex. mice, spiders) and proper food storage rules/standards are strictly enforced. Children under 18 years of age are not allowed in employee housing areas. Pets are not allowed.

A limited number of RV spaces are available with full hook-ups for employees with a self-contained trailer or motor home. You are responsible for performing your own hook-up tasks. Our spaces are in a secluded area fairly inaccessible to park visitors. The cost for RV housing is $5 per person, per day.

Do not bring valuable personal items, as our company is not responsible for the loss of such items. We provide one set of sheets and towels, but you must supply your own blankets or a good sleeping bag. Nights can be cold and the summer days can be quite warm. We also receive rain throughout the season, so pack accordingly. You are responsible for your own amenities such as soap, toothpaste, other grocery items and camping supplies. They can be purchased in our local markets at a discount of 25%. We have an employee meal plan that may be purchased or deducted from your paycheck. The average price of an employee meal is $4.

Bring a flashlight.

IN CLOSING

The work is demanding but fulfilling. We expect dedication, enthusiasm and a good work ethic with a cheerful attitude. In return, you will have the opportunity to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Many of our seasonal employees have gone on to careers in the hospitality industry. With the seasonal nature of our business, you will certainly be asked to perform tasks not specified in your job classification. You may also be asked to work in different areas of the park than originally offered. Teamwork is definitely an asset in this job. To live in and work in a National Park or Forest high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is the chance of a lifetime, one you will always remember.
